Difference Makers:

Douglas Scrivner, JD '77

Douglas G. Scrivner, JD ’77, is not only a trusted community leader and philanthropist but also a longtime supporter of the University of Denver. As co-chair of The Denver Difference Campaign, a University of Denver trustee, and chair emeritus, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the University and the broader community through decades of service, philanthropy, and leadership.

Doug began his tenure on the DU Board of Trustees in 2008, serving as board chair from 2014 to 2018. During the University’s previous fundraising campaign, ASCEND, he chaired the Trustees’ Advancement Committee, overseeing key functions including development, alumni and parent relations, donor relations and stewardship, communications, and operations. Under his leadership, the campaign successfully raised nearly $500 million. Today, Doug is serving as co-chair of The Denver Difference, a historic billion-dollar fundraising campaign designed to redefine the promise of higher education and establish DU as a standard for excellence in higher education. Thanks in large part to his continued guidance, the University is already 70 percent toward meeting this ambitious goal.

Doug and his wife, Mary, who married at DU’s historic Evans Chapel, have made a tremendous philanthropic impact across the university and greater community. Their contributions support scholarships, research, public policy initiatives, academic programs, and campus development. In recognition of their extraordinary service, they received DU’s highest honor, the Founders Medal, in 2025.

A dedicated advocate for education and public policy, the Scrivners founded the Douglas and Mary Scrivner Institute of Public Policy at the Josef Korbel School of Global and Public Affairs. As an interdisciplinary hub for education, research, and public engagement, the Scrivner Institute addresses today’s most pressing policy issues, from local to global.

His contributions to the Sturm College of Law have been equally impactful, including serving as chair of the Visiting Committee, national co-chair of the Second Century Campaign, and a member of the law school's advisory board and executive committee of the Institute for the Advancement of the American Legal System. In addition, he has enriched the academic community as an adjunct law professor. His dedication and service to the law school were recognized in 2006 at the annual Law Stars celebration, where he was honored with the Thompson G. Marsh Award.

Doug retired in 2011 after a distinguished 31-year career at Accenture, a Fortune Global 500 company, where he served as general counsel. During his tenure, he built and led a global legal team of over 400 lawyers in 35 countries.

Doug earned an AB in political science and history from Duke University, an MSc in international relations from the London School of Economics, and a JD from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. His enduring dedication to DU has shaped the lives of countless students and will continue to shape the University for generations to come.

Let’s show the world what DU can do.

The Denver Difference campaign is empowering DU to lead with a bold, innovative approach and redefine higher education — driving a lasting impact on the public good through its visionary people, programs, and places.
